    Growing Old Fast...

Time seems to FLY anymore. My little sister is graduating from High School tomorrow and I have to ask: "Where did the time go? Where's Hopey instead of the woman Hope?" It's crazy to think that she's going to be 18 and in Nursing School next year!!

I also think of the seniors that are graduating this year from my ministry...where did the time go? Didn't I just see you in 10th grade? What the heck! Plus, the freshman I started with are now seniors...where does time go?

This talk is making me nostalgic...I'm thinking back to my youth group days and see that my Jr. High Youth Pastor (Scott Wakeley) is totally still in ministry in the same position and still loving it. However, seeing students like me in ministry, graduated from COLLEGE, I'm sure he's been asking this question for years: "Where does the time go?" It seems crazy.

May God Bless all you grads...CLING to Christ!

    Last Night (Wednesday May 28)

Last night we looked at the calling of a Hero. I opened the evening up with this clip from The Lion King:

I highlighted the part where Mufasa says: "You are more than you've become, you are my son...". I told the teens that they can be more than they've ever thought, because they are God's child and they can become heroes! The main points I made last night were that the world's definition of a hero is slightly different than God's.

The world's definition is someone with super powers, or someone extraordinary doing acts of courage or spectacular feats that average people can't do. God says anyone can be his hero and the calling of a hero is two things: LOVE and SERVICE. I shared with them the stories of Moses, Jesus and David all of whom were heroes and the things that defined them were LOVE and SERVICE!

As a side point I shared that we need to only please God, we don't need to please anyone but Him, so we can love and serve others, like the kid that no one wants to sit with because we don't care what others think, only what God thinks. I said it's hard and the only was we can be heroes is with God beside us!

    Trip to DC...

Hilary and I got back to Nyack, NY at about 8pm last night from DC. Hilary and I spent a GREAT time with friends and family. We drove Sue Pettit (m boss's wife) down with us and had some GREAT conversation with her on Friday. Hung out with my sister that afternoon, we went into downtown Washington, D.C. and saw: The Capitol Building, the Washington Monument and the Native American Museum. Went back to Heather and Brooke's house (my sis and her hubby) and watched Tyler Perry's "WHY did I get married?"

We then went to bed and hit the sites again on Saturday morning seeing The National Archives, the Museum of Natural History and the Mall (which is a BIG chunk of grass). After this fun, we picked up Brooke at the airport because he was on a trip to Louisiana helping out some people down there with Habitat for Humanity.

After we picked him up, we traveled to CHIPOTLE and had some good grub. Next day, went to church had a picnic at Roosevelt Island, headed home for grub, then watched Iron Man (the Guys) and Made of Honor (the Girls). Lastly, we hit up D.C. for a third time and checked out the Lincoln Memorial, the WWII memorial, the Vietnam Memorial and the Mirror. We then headed home to bed.

Hilary and I woke up, ate some food and at 3pm headed home...and got there at 8pm! That was our Memorial Day/Anniversary Weekend!!

THANK YOU TO: Sue Pettit for a FUN ride, Heather and Brookey for an AMAZING WEEKEND and my lovely wife for MAKING it even MORE fun!!

    Coffee, Coffee, COFFEE! (Part 2)

Today, I DID have my coffee and boy am I HYPER!! I was annoying everyone in staff meeting because I was so hyper (not really annoying, just livening them up). Todays coffee is Gold Blend from Starbucks. Freshly ground and freshly made. It's labeled "Extra Bold". Here's what I look like in my office (seriously this is true)

Here's a quick video of my hyper-ness in action listening to the Afters :)

    Last Night (Wednesday May 21)

Last night, we talked about How to have the Heart of a Hero. We looked at a shocking story where there were severe consequences, yet still received grace. We focussed on the life of King David and saw a few things from his life that allowed us to see how to have the heart of a hero.

Here is what we discussed: God cares more about the INSIDE than the OUTSIDE; God's forgiveness is FAR-REACHING; God still allows CONSEQUENCES to our sins and God's GRACE is bigger than my GOOF-UPS!

Having recognition of all those ideas is part of having the heart of a hero! God can use you as a hero to other people...no matter what you look like and God can forgive you no matter what you've done to make you a hero!!!

    Tonight (TUES May 20)

Tonight, we talked about integrity. I started off with a shocking story of people cheating on a test and asked about the integrity of the men who did it. I discussed the ideas of all facets of integrity.

I challenged the youth about how honest they are, where they let go of their integrity and why they let go of it. I shared how truly important our integrity is. I used Daniel 6 to describe how Daniel was a strong man of integrity and challenged each student to become people of integrity.

    Thinking About Tonight...

Tonight, we're talking about integrity and the temptation to be integrity-less. I am shocked as I look back into my last 2 years here and realize I've never talked about it...I am excited about it and believe that it's going to be GREAT! I'll let you know :)

    BIG Dreams...

I often sit and dream. People who know me, know that sometimes I come up with HUGE ideas for myself and the ministry that I am in. I often say things like: "I want to write a book, in fact I'm gonna" or "I want to speak at a conference with 10,000 people" or even "I want to be used to help design and organize Global Youth Ministry". These are my BIG dreams. They used to be due to pride. the ever present: "if only I have this, then I'll be BIG and people will know me" type of attitude.

However, God has changed my heart and said that my dreams aren't wrong, my dreams just needed a new motive...to glorify God instead of myself.

Let me encourage you to DREAM BIG...follow your God given passions, and don't surrender to the "I could never do that" thought! God has given us the gift of dreaming...we just need to attach the right motive to our dreams and that motive is to Glorify our Lord rather than others or ourselves. Use your gifts, allow God to grow you, stretch you and pull you! If you are a gifted orator, speak to millions. If your a gifted encourager, encourage millions, if you can write, write to millions and write tons! If you can preach, preach...these are God's gifts to you!

What are you waiting for? Get dreaming!

    Coffee, Coffee, COFFEE!

I've been drinking Starbucks Christmas Blend (I know, it's not Christmas) for the past 2 days with my typical Creme Brulee creamer...today I neglected to make it and I am tired! In fact this is how I look:

Actually, that's more acting than reality, but still I feel wiped today because I'm missing my sweet, sweet Starbucks loving! What are you missing today? Comment :)

    Rob Bell and Velvet Elvis...

I have jut finished Rob Bell's Velvet Elvis and I really liked it! Tons of his ideas are rich with truth and amazing possibilities for the generations to come.

I've seen and heard TONS of well-meaning Christians bash this fellow brother to bits and called him a heretic of the worst kind. Trust me brothers and sisters, he is NOT a heretic. His ideas and thoughts are radical to be sure, but none of is it inconsistent with scripture. If you take his words out of context, then yes he is heretical, but if you read his words, or listen to his Nooma videos IN context, then it's really difficult to say that.

There is so much I want to say about the book Velvet Elvis, one of which is it'll push you! It'll make you question and will force you to search the scriptures, because Rob brings thoughts and ideas I've never even thought about.

Another is I want to mention the ideas that he is a humanist and not a Christian. I've heard this statement spat at him in hatred and I want to stand up and show you how he 's not. People got upset because of his chapter in this book (also a Nooma video) called "Dust" in which he mentions WHY Peter started to sink when he was walking on water. Rob says (and rightfully I believe) that Peter started to sink because he lost faith, not in Jesus but himself. Now again, if you take just that part, then yes, it would sound humanistic. However, Rob takes us to the meaning of disciple in the time of Jesus and how Christ chose his disciples because he knew and trusted they could do what he did. (Watch 'Dust' below) Peter wanted to prove he could do what Jesus was doing and wanted to come out on the water with Jesus. Many people would stop and say that Rob is suggesting that Peter does it on his own, which is NOT the case.

Rob is simply saying that Peter doubted his faith in himself, because he didn't trust what Jesus said about himself...that he can do anything he sees his Master do. He didn't believe he could, when he sees the waves he doubts his faith. He knows Jesus can do it, because he's not sinking.

To say that's a humanist logic is totally not true. We fall into sin, not because we are doubting Jesus, but we doubt ourselves and allow the enemy entrance into our lives. We sin when "by our own evil desires we are dragged away and enticed". It's not all about us, no, sometimes we can't trust Christ either, however my point it that people have been taking Rob Bell out of context and spitting lies about him...and then people believe the lies and tell them to someone else...

    Heroes: Jr. High week 1

This month is going to be FUN! This is one of my favorite topics to talk about, because everyone in life does need a hero. I started last night with a quick video from the new Superman movie (you can watch it below), which got the students thinking about how we need a hero in our lives.

I asked them who their personal hero was in their life, who they looked up to and who they said in their heads: "I want to be like them" was. I the shared how our society is completely obsessed with heroes and the idea of heroes. I shared how many Super-Hero movies there are and how much each of them earned in the box-office when they came out (Iron Man for example last week-end earned $100 million dollars).

Lastly, I showed them in Romans 3, how we ALL need a hero, because we are not good enough, and how we have all messed up...but that Jesus is our Hero, he is the one who has saved us!!

    Tuesday Night: Temptation week 1

Tonight, we opened up the topic of Temptation with the topic of drugs and alcohol. It was a pretty "light" night as we simply defined what temptation was, and discussed how we have all suffer from it.

As always, the guys small group surprised me. Even though I brought "lighter" material tonight, the guys took it to a deeper level. For this, I can't take a lick of credit...God has blessed me with amazing leaders who hear the voice of God and move that way.

God is doing something in my heart and I believe I will be putting the "Temptation" theme on hold next week...be on the look-see for what they will mean.

In the mean time, enjoy this video which I showed tonight in order to start the topic of temptation.

    New Feature!!

    Something funny for Monday

As many of you may know, there have been several CRAZY things that have happened to me in my life...and I love to share them. Today's story is no exception.

The year was 2004 and my then girlfriend (now wife Hilary) came on vacationto the Outer Banks, NC with my family for the first time. I had just finished my first year of college and Hilary and I were growing closer to each other...

This isn't a sentimental story, so I will stop with the history and get to the goods. We all decided to go to the beach and swim and swim we did. We were in that ocean for a good 4-5 hours enjoying the waves, the sun and the great times. Soon however, it was time to eat. So we left the beach and headed towards the pre-shower showers which you use outside to get all the sand off BEFORE you go inside.

Well, my turn was up and all day I noticed something in my swim trunks near my rear-end, yet ignored it, think it was a big chunk of sand or something similar...

As my crazy life would have it, I stuck my hand into my trunks to search for this chunk of sand and pulled out a FISH!! There was a fish in my trunks near my butt all day long!!

What did I do? Well, I ran outside and showed off my fishing prowess of course! I showed my butt-fish off and even put it on the window-sill in my room for all to remember and see my butt fish, the fish that came up my shorts and died next to my butt!!

(This story is true) Have a GREAT Monday!

PS...Yes, Hilary who was my girlfriend then DID marry me...I guess she loves a fisherman...

    The Messiness of Evangelism

A hard lesson I had to learn not only about my faith in Jesus, but also as a member of this culture was this: I cannot hold a non-Christian to a Christian standard. I cannot expect someone who has NO CLUE about Christ and his transforming power to live as though they do.

However, we as Christians do that very thing from time to time and because we do, we turn people away from the Christ that can transform them.

Tonight, some of my youth group guys IMPRESSED me. We had two students at are chill with the guys night who had pretty foul mouths...yet my youth didn't say to them: "Dude, Marv's a pastor and I'm a Christian, so please don't swear around me, because I get offended". No, they ignored the foulness and loved them through it.

We hung out, we ate, watched a movie and these guys WILL be back. One student, who claims to be an atheist has been coming back time and time again. We have embraced him despite it and have not forced him to live up to our "standard"

I mean how could he? He doesn't know the love of Christ. He hasn't experienced the hand of God resting on him as a chosen son. Yet, he still comes to our group...because he feels loved and accepted by us. I GUARANTEE that had we said to him: "Before you come here, you need to fix that mouth" he would've never come back, because essentially to the youth of today if you say: "Please stop swearing, it's offensive" they will hear the before you come here, fix that mouth line.

Evangelism now a days is MESSY. This may sound awkward, but the more non-Christian kids that come to our group with foul mouths the more I will rejoice, because to them, the church is a place that they feel loved despite their flaws...and eventually, Christ will transform them!

This is evangelism, Jesus style. He hung out with grimy, foul-mouthed, demon-possessed, drunks, tax collectors (awful friend choice in his day), prostitutes and the lame. He never had "prerequisites" of them . He never said: "Before we hag out, get your act together"...NO! It was him accepting them, loving them and then transforming them!

I am glad my teens are grabbing this principle that it took me 21 years to grab!

    Gawkering...

A blog I frequent (Ragamuffin Soul) had this awesome feature that he shared in which a program connected to his iSight camera (only on the MAC) and took a picture every 5 seconds and then compiled it into a quicktime movie, thus showing your day in 5 second segments (it takes about 2 minutes) So, I thought: Cool idea, I'll do it too, here's what came out...

Enjoy yall...let me know what you think...
