This week, we talked about Identity Theft. We opened up with a scene from Bourne Identity, in which Jason Bourne is looking in the mirror and asking himself who he is.
I then gave a person (silly) story of when I thought I could be Batman...then I pooped my pants and realized...I could never really be Batman.
Teens, whether they realize it or not are looking for their Identity, and this all goes back to the beginning. When God made man, he made known their Identities...they walked with him, talked with him and lived life alongside of God.
Then the Deceiver came in the midst and confused Adam and Eve into giving up their known Identities to seek out a "better" one. After the fall, they run from God, and try to cover themselves with new clothes. Their Identity was stolen...and so was ours.
It breaks my heart to see teens seeking and "finding" their Identities in destructive (and non-destructive) things rather than in God.
This week, I shared with them the ID theft that Satan caused and how they too need to find their identities.
Ephesians 2:1-3 discusses what life without Christ (the supplier of our Identity) looks like. We give ourselves over to things that don't last and attempt to seek out who we are within those things. However, Ephesians 2:4-9 gives us the good news that because of Christ, we no longer have to look to fading things for our identity, but we can look to the eternal Christ to give us our true identities!
Here were my main points:
1. We look to the world for our Identity rather than to God
2. We do this because the deceiver wants us to lose our true identity
3. Without Christ, we are dead because out identity was stolen
4. Because of Christ's death, we don't have to lose our true identity
